Weather & Seasons
Yellowstone's weather swings hard by season and elevation. Summers (June-August) are mild by day but can turn cold and stormy fast, especially in the afternoon. Winter is a different park entirely: most interior roads close to regular vehicles from mid-November through mid-to-late April, and the only way to see the geyser basins is by guided snowcoach or snowmobile.

Yellowstone has five entrances across Montana and Wyoming. West Yellowstone, MT is the busiest and closest to Old Faithful and Grand Prismatic Spring. Gardiner, MT is the only entrance open to regular vehicles year-round. Cody and Jackson, WY offer the East and South entrances, and Jackson also gateways Grand Teton National Park just to the south.
Best Time to Visit
Late May through September gives you full road access and the widest range of open services, but July and August are the busiest months by far. Shoulder-season visitors (May, September-October) get thinner crowds and active wildlife. Winter (mid-December through early March) is a completely different, completely unique way to see the park, accessible only by guided snowcoach or snowmobile.
